Who We Are
Sustainable Pastoralist Care and Empowerment (S.P.A.C.E.) is a non-profit organisation dedicated to improving the lives and well-being of marginalised pastoralist communities in Northern Kenya. Our work focuses on sustainable development, education, environmental conservation, healthcare support and economic empowerment programs.
We collaborate closely with local communities, youth, women, leaders and development partners to co-create sustainable solutions that foster resilience, self-reliance and inclusive growth — championing climate resilience, regenerative practices and inclusive growth through innovative programs, strategic partnerships and targeted advocacy.
At our core, SPACE is committed to advancing a future where thriving economies, healthy ecosystems and social justice are not disparate goals, but rather interconnected outcomes of collective action.
Vision
A just and sustainable future where all people thrive with dignity and resilience.
Mission
To empower people in Africa’s drylands with tailored economic programs that strengthen livelihoods and restore the environment.
Core Values
Equity and justice, sustainability, collaboration, resilience and integrity guide our commitment to transparency, accountability, and respect for both people and nature.
Strategic Goal
In the short to medium term, SPACE aims to reach one million peoplein Africa’s drylands with skills, resources and green opportunities that strengthen livelihoods and restore the environment.
Thematic Areas
SPACE operates through an integrated model where each thematic area serves as a vital pillar for community transformation — Education as a foundation for growth, Culture to keep development culturally grounded, and Healthcare to improve access and well-being. Our environmental and economic strategies are equally interconnected: Climate Resilience and Natural Resource Management foster ecological balance, culminating in sustainable Livelihoods that strengthen household stability.
Theory of Change
Our Theory of Change connects the problems faced by pastoralist communities in Northern Kenya with our solutions — leading to tangible outcomes at individual, household, community and systemic levels, and culminating in our ultimate goal.
The Problem
Pastoralist communities face a growing crisis as climate shocks and land degradation destroy traditional livelihoods — worsened by a lack of essential services, political marginalisation, and the erosion of indigenous culture and knowledge that weakens resilience.
Our Solutions
We blend modern education with indigenous wisdom to empower youth and women, restore the environment through regenerative grazing and rangeland rehabilitation, and diversify income sources while providing essential healthcare for the most vulnerable.
Outcomes
Empowered individuals build resilient, food-secure households; communities gain the tools to manage resources collectively and reduce conflict; and local policies and markets begin to respect and support pastoralist livelihoods.
“A just and sustainable future where marginalised pastoralist communities in Northern Kenya thrive with dignity and resilience — characterised by robust livelihoods, healthy ecosystems and equitable access to opportunities.”
